How To Stop Those Food Cravings
On the whole, when you suffer from cravings for particular foods, it means your body is trying to tell you that it is not getting the right fuel mix to allow your cells to create the right level of energy. Your body is trying to say, “help! I need energy… now!” The usual result is a craving for sugary, sweet foods, because they will give you that urgently needed energy lift that your cells are crying out for (there, you’ve always wanted a legitimate reason to binge on cream cakes and donuts, haven’t you)!
On the other hand, if you don’t eat enough protein along with your carbohydrates, that stops you from being able to metabolize the carbohydrates properly. Because your cells can’t break down those starches and sugars efficiently, your body stores some of your food as fat instead of turning it into energy. This means you get hungry again quickly… the food cravings return because you still don’t have enough energy. Because the balance isn’t right you still can’t convert the food quickly enough, so you store more fat (put on more weight)… and the cycle continues.
The answer, quite simply, is to correct the balance of fuel that you’re putting into your body in the first place. Work out what your metabolic type is, so that you know what kind of balance of carbohydrate, protein and fat you personally require (see the links below for more information about metabolic typing if this is new to you). Stick to that balance for a while. You’ll be amazed at how quickly those food cravings disappear!
You might also be surprised to find that, as you start eating the right balance of foods for your metabolic type, your tastes will begin to change. As your body metabolism stabilizes, you’ll find yourself really quite liking foods which you might previously have eaten under sufferance, and equally finding much less pleasure in the instant, empty foods that you would once have relished.
Think back to when you were a child. If you can, remember the first time you tasted alcohol, or smoked a cigarette, or ate a highly processed burger. The chances are your body told you in no uncertain terms that this was something that it wanted nothing to do with. You may have choked, spluttered, gasped, or in the case of the burger thought, “Yeeuk – bland, squishy and salty!” But over the years we condition our bodies with too much sugar, junk food, environmental chemicals, so that our appetites become distorted. We literally stop being able to taste our food properly. But after a relatively short time eating right for our metabolic type, we get ourselves back in balance and recover the ability to immediately discriminate between foods that suit us and those that don’t.
Added to that, you’re health improves, your body-weight stabilizes at a healthy level, your energy levels balance out at a comfortable high (not hyper, just a good, healthy, long term active level), and you feel light and clean internally. What’s not to like?
Try not to view cravings as your enemy – they are a valuable pointer to what’s missing from your current diet. When you put good, wholesome versions of the missing ingredients into your diet, you’ll feel satisfied, energized and those food cravings will be gone. So it’s time to tackle them head on, and stop letting food control you. Find your metabolic type, and free those taste buds! You’ve got a fantastic kaleidoscope of flavors to look forward to. Enjoy!
